Veronica Seider possessed eyes with a remarkable superhuman ability, allowing her to see and identify a person from as far as one mile away.
Who is Veronica Seider
Meet Veronica Seider, a remarkable individual who possessed what many would describe as "superhuman" powers. Born in West Germany in 1951, Veronica grew up like any other German child, attending school and going about her daily life. As she got older, she enrolled at Stuttgart University in West Germany, pursuing her dream of becoming a dentist.
Veronica Seider’s Amazing Eyesight
In 1972, when Veronica was just 21 years old, she was subjected to a series of visual tests at her university, and the results were simply mind-blowing.
The university reported that Veronica's eyesight was far beyond that of any normal person. She could identify a person from a distance of one mile, which is equivalent to 1.6 kilometers - about 20 times better than the average person can see. This made her the record holder for having the best vision reported at the time.
Veronica's visual acuity was approximately 20/2, which is way beyond the normal human eyesight of 20/20. She could easily recognize individuals from a mile away and could even calculate their relative distance from her. She was also able to see objects that were microscopically small - a feat that was nothing short of amazing.
Veronica Seider's also claimed to be able to see the colors that made up a frame on a colored television display - a talent that was almost beyond comprehension to scientists.
Veronica demonstrated her exceptional up close vision by tearing a piece of paper to match the size of her fingernail and then writing 20 lines of a poem on it with precision.
The Science Behind Veronica Seider’s Incredible Eyesight
A video telling the story of Veronica Seider
According to science, any color is made up of three main colors - red, blue, and green. Normal eyes see color as a combination of primary colors in varying quantities.
This is where Veronica's abilities were truly unique. She could see colors in terms of their components - red, blue, and green - an ability that is difficult to comprehend for those of us with normal vision.
The typical human eye's ability to distinguish objects decreases to 100 microns or 0.0003 radians at a distance of 25 cm. To provide context, one micron is equivalent to one thousandth of a millimeter, meaning that 100 microns is approximately one-tenth of a millimeter, which is incredibly small - approximately the size of a dot on a piece of paper.
The average human eye can perceive objects that are even smaller than this, given that the object is sufficiently bright, and the environmental conditions are favorable.
A bright star billions of light-years away is an example of such an object. Some stars, as well as other bright light sources, are only 3 to 4 microns in diameter, yet they can be detected by an average human eye, which is remarkable given their tiny size.
Due to a genetic anomaly, Veronica’s vision was 20 times better than this for both distance and seeing things up close.
Others With Superhuman Vision
A Newcastle University neuroscientist, Gabriele Jordan, and her team have been searching for tetrachromats, people with a fourth cone in their eyes that allows them to see a wider range of colors than the average person.
The existence of tetrachromats was first hinted at in a 1948 study on color blindness, but it wasn't until 2007 that Jordan found the first confirmed tetrachromat, a doctor living in northern England known only as cDa29. Jordan is now trying to figure out why cDa29 is different from other four-coned women and what allows her to be functionally tetrachromatic.
One theory is that potential tetrachromats may need practice to awaken their abilities and see colors beyond what is perceptible to the average person.
It seems there could be many people among us who have superhuman vision and may not even be aware of it.
