Wikipedia is edited to mention Nancy Benoit’s death 14 hours before police discovered her body

Chris, Nancy and Daniel Benoit before their deaths

Before the police went to Chris Benoit's house and found him and his family dead, someone made changes to the Wikipedia page about him. These changes were made anonymously and talked about the death of his wife, Nancy Benoit.

The Unsettling Wikipedia Edit About Nancy Benoit

Someone using a computer with the IP address 69.120.111.23, connected through the Optimum Online internet service provider, made changes to Chris Benoit's Wikipedia article at 04:01 UTC. In a paragraph discussing a previous fight, the anonymous editor added information about personal issues Chris Benoit faced, which were said to be related to the death of his wife Nancy. Less than an hour later, this edit was undone, and a comment was left asking for a reliable source to support the claim about his wife's death.

Just one hour after the first edit was reverted, another anonymous edit was made from the IP address 125.63.148.173, using the unwiredAustralia.com.au wireless internet service provider. This edit mentioned that several professional wrestling websites attributed Chris Benoit's personal issues to the passing of his wife Nancy. This edit was also undone because mentioning "several pro wrestling websites" was not considered reliable information.

Fourteen hours after the edits, police discovered the bodies of Chis Benoit, his wife Nancy and their son Daniel in their Fayetteville home.

On Monday, June 25, 2007, wrestlers and important people from WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment) came to Corpus Christi for a WWE Raw event scheduled for that evening at the American Bank Center. As the afternoon went on and the time for the show approached, the WWE officials became worried because they hadn't heard from Chris Benoit for more than 24 hours. Eddie Guerrero, another wrestler, showed John Laurinaitis, who works for WWE, the text messages he and another person received from Chris and Nancy Benoit's cell phones early on Sunday. As more time passed without any communication from Chris Benoit, WWE called the police in Fayetteville, Georgia, to check on the well-being of the Benoit family at their home. The police discovered the bodies and around 4:15 p.m. (CDT) informed WWE that they found the bodies of Chris, Nancy, and Daniel Benoit, and the house was now considered a "major crime scene."

Was the Wiki Editor Somehow Involved with the Murder-Suicide?

The editor wrote a long explanation about what happened and said sorry for the unfortunate coincidence. When asked if they would give an interview through the Talk Page, they refused, saying, "I really just want to move on from all this. I made a mistake, and I'm sorry. I know I've said sorry many times, but today has been a tough day with this story getting a lot of attention, even though it was just a big coincidence."

Police detectives tracked down the editor and seized computer equipment for further investigation. They called the posts a major problem for their investigation but came to the conclusion that he wasn’t involved in any other way, so they didn't charge him with anything. The man had seen several rumors online that supported his idea about the Benoit "family emergency," which was being talked about in wrestling news. The IP address used to make the edits was tentatively linked to other instances of vandalism on Wikipedia pages, including those about the African wild ass, The Bronx, The Sopranos, Ron Artest, Stacy Keibler, and Naugatuck, Connecticut. He also fixed vandalism on Chavo Guerrero Jr.'s page and predicted a loss for the Golden State Warriors.

Was it just an insane coincidence?

A video by Wrestlelamia investigating the Benoit wikipedia edit.

Well this case could just be an extreme coincidence, I personally believe it could be an example people unconsciously accessing something like the Akashic Record. The Akashic Record is a collection of all human knowledge that some believe any of us can potentially access, even unintentionally. Perhaps the people starting the rumours or even the infamous Wikipedia editor unknowingly acquired knowledge of Nancy’s death as it happened.

It’s also possible that previous news reports about Chris’s erratic behavior and Nancy’s ill-health caused people to make assumptions that she had died and that’s why Chris failed to appear at his wrestling event.

What do you think? Tell us in the comments.
